Born in Mexico in 1960, Mike Elizalde immigrated to the United States with his parents when he was five years old. That’s when Mike’s interest in movie monsters began. His earliest creative influences included films like FRANKENSTEIN and THE CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON. The images in those films would stay with Mike his entire life and light the path for his career as a creature designer. Using Lee Baygan’s book, Techniques of Three Dimensional Makeup, Mike assembled a portfolio of original makeup designs and shortly thereafter, landed his first job in the world of creature and makeup effects.
Mike quickly established himself as a makeup designer, sculptor and one of the top animatronic engineers in his field. He has since worked on over 80 feature films, including X-MEN: THE LAST STAND, HELLBOY II: THE GOLDEN ARMY and LOOPER. Elizalde and his wife Mary established Spectral Motion Incorporated in 1994. Mike worked under the company’s moniker with such top-level effects companies as Rick Baker’s Cinovation and Stan Winston Studio in the years that followed.
Today, Spectral Motion is recognized as one of the leading makeup and creature effects studios in the industry. Mike received an Academy Award Nomination for his work on HELLBOY II: THE GOLDEN ARMY. He won a Saturn Award in 2004 for his work on the first HELLBOY film.
Elizalde is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the Screen Actors Guild and of the Makeup Artists and Hairstylists Union, Local 706. He is also a ‘Magician Member’ at the world famous Hollywood Magic Castle.
